And now I’m actually considering procreation, just so I can do this to my future progeny. My children will be reciting “to be or not to be” and air-guitaring to “Enter Sandman” before they can walk.

Procreation? There’s no reason why you couldn’t attempt to do this with a child fashionably adopted from an impoverished region. You’ll be chic and socially conscious!

Synth Britannia (Part 1/9)

“In the late 1970s, small pockets of electronic artists including the Human League, Daniel Miller and Cabaret Volatire were inspired by Kraftwerk and JG Ballard and dreamt of the sound of the future against the backdrop of bleak, high-rise Britain”

Synth rock was the first cyborg sub-genre, methinks. Even its name suggests the pained fusion of dispassionate electronics and New Romantic melancholia. And like the Borg, it has since proven quite effective at assimilating the defining characteristics of the styles it makes contact with: postpunk’s art damaged standoffish posturings; disco’s celebratory bacchanalia. And somewhere en route to siring bastard offshoots like electroclash and big beat, it ceased to be what it originally was.

Maybe it just couldn’t exist in its original form outside the context of Thatcher era’s Blighted Isles. Regardless, this docu promises to be a fascinating look at this misunderstood sound.

Another repost for Flashback Friday.
This was shot at Clark’s Comics, in Causeway Bay Center, Hong Kong. The store became my default LCS after Legends & Heroes shut down. (I always preferred the selection at Comics Box in Miramar Plaza, Tsim Sha Tsui, but it was out of the way for my Island-centric routine, when I still lived there.)

Can you spot all the horrible 90s gimmicks? I see the awful redesigned “electric” Superman logo from his brief resurrection as a Doc Manhattan ripoff; the Scarlet Spider from the “Clone Saga”; and Top Cow’s The Darkness (with a harem of scantily clad bimbos).

Oh, and what’s up with that cheesy Pamela Anderson poster in the background? It doesn’t seem to be an obvious comic book tie in, like Barb Wire?

If Oscar Niemeyer’s national congress building mated with the Death Star, this is their lovechild. Surely shows that great architecture is not destined only to the first world.

Plus, i’ve always regarded Nash as being lightyears ahead of her peers, musically (with the possible exception of Lily Allen).

And i’m not gonna deny it — I find Nash decidedly attractive. (There. I said it.)

She displays real charm and pluck in this clip. It totally works. It almost reminds me of the dynamic between a curmudgeonly Warren Ellis protagonist, and his spunky assistant, I guess.

via Environmental Graffiti ::

Archigram’s Walking City:
A 60’s Architectural Vision of the Future

Whoever feels strangely reminded of the Beatles’ cover art and Monty Python when viewing the picture above is not far off: it’s a design by radical art collective Archigram, founded in 1961. Their pop-inspired ideas of mobility – walking cities in particular – and radical urban design have inspired many contemporary architects and continue to inspire futuristic designs today.

Balita by Mixkaela Villalon

Balita by Mixkaela Villalon:
3rd place winner in the Essay category for Timpalak Panitik, the UP Filipino Department’s writing contest, this year.

With lots of people on my Dashboard feed busting out New Jack jams and smoothed over 90s hip-hop for YNYL (You Nostalgia, You Lose!), I figure now would be an ideal time to offer a contrarian view. Consider excerpt from Balita, by Mixka Villalon:

But I quickly realized that wasn’t very likely to happen, since I wasn’t a rail-thin, pasty-faced shock rocker. Oh well.
